They fight over the misunderstanding, Knuckles finds out his new friend was EVVILLLLL and the two team up to kick his ass. If your into sonic you’ve seen SOME form of this wether it be sonic 3 and knuckles, archie, fleetway, sonic x apparently, Sonic 2 or this very episode, you know the basics: Robotnik tricks knuckles into thinking sonic is a bad dude. Now we’re all caught up this is your standard knuckles introduction. ![]() So as a refresher from last time: Sonic Underground follows Sonic and his siblings: theif manic and former aristocrat sonia, who were left at various homes after a useless weird nose predcition man told their mother to abandon them because of a vision of Robotnik’s invasion so now they go around in a van, thwart robotnik, hunt their mom and play songs that so loosely fit the defention of music I worry the music industry will sue me just for calling them anything resembling music. So join me won’t you as we go deeper underground to an island in the heavens to meet the one to set your heart free true and then watch as he tries to cleanse the evil spirts that live in dingo. Yes the one where sonic and his siblings try to actively murder music once an episode is the ONLY one of the DiC trilogy to use him and as i’d covered undreground before and a lot of you seemed to enjoy it, I felt this would be an intresting thing to go back to and see just how knuckles debuted over here and to see the last time his classic self would get introduced in a continuity before the shift to modern. As such while the OVA used him before this as his proper animated debut, it wasn’t till this show he got to debut in western animation. but adventures only had it’s 52 episode run and while SATAM wanted to it was canceled before he could be introduced in season 3. So surely both cartoons rolled out the red carpet too right? Well. More on Ken later, i’ve had to rewrite this multiple times not to rant about the guy. Granted some of that is because head writer Ken Penders REALLY liked Knuckles and had the creative freedom to make up whatever convuluted mythlogy he wanted for the character, but knuckles was still geninely popular and archie wouldn’t of made this bad decsiion if there wans’t an audience for it. He later got an ongoing, the ONLY one of sonic’s cast to get their own and got backups again when that got cancled. And that of course applied to Knuckles, who on both sides of the atlantic quickly became a major breakout character: Both continuties gave him his own ongoing solo stories, with archie giving him MULTIPLE special sincluding Super Sonic Vs Hyper Knuckles aka “Sonic and KNuckles beat the shit out of each other for an issue, that’s the plot and you still bought it anyway”. So naturally the few times game characters came about they were given a sizeable intro in the comics with amy, metal sonic, the chaotix and knack all getting an arc (in fleetway) or an issue or special (in archie) to celebrate. It wasn’t a bad thing: the freedom fighters are some of the best characters in the franchises long history, and it forced said writers to get really creative and create a lot of cool new charcters and concepts to fill the void. It’s why both Dic Shows and Fleetway created entirely new characters to fill out the supporting cast and why Archie just borrowed SATAM’s: there wasn’t a large bench to pull from. When he landed he was a massive deal and for good reason: back then sonic was a fairly new franchise and thus new characters from the games themselves were a slow trickle. Knuckles is a character with a very intresting history. First up is that buff porcupine echidna on the block with the buff chest, out in the wilderness with the ruggedness: Knuckles. And now we’re all warmed up it’s time to spotlight the two big addtions to the sonic cinematic unverse: Tails and Knuckles. ![]() Hello all you happy Hedgehogs!
